Chateau Mcely

Château Mcely is a restaurant selected by MICHELIN for 2025 and a recipient of the MICHELIN Key; thanks to its high-quality cuisine, it ranks among the most exceptional hotels in the world. The MICHELIN Guide recognized Château Mcely as a cultural ambassador that harmonizes with its surroundings and reflects a local identity, combining architectural vision, culinary expertise, a distinctive personality, and attentive service. Among other things, it states: “Château Mcely is the modern five-star incarnation of a 17th-century hunting lodge. Of course, the European nobility of the Baroque era would not have retreated to the countryside to live in less-than-princely accommodations, so the château is decidedly palatial. A stroll through the meticulously manicured gardens surrounding the château gives a good sense of what to expect: a tribute to rural luxury that is both rich in detail and dreamlike—a fairy tale with attentive service.”

The castle is situated in the heart of a five-acre English-style park and St George’s Wood, 50 minutes from Prague. As soon as the gates open, the original aristocratic Thurn-Taxis estate offers guests the chance to leave their worries behind and, in harmony with the season, immerse themselves fully in the present moment – whether they are seeking romance or relaxation or are visiting for a conference, a celebration or a wedding. All this is provided with loving care and in accordance with ecological principles. Comfort is ensured in 24 rooms, each with its own name and design. Guests’ taste buds are treated to a culinary experience at the long-acclaimed ‘Piano Nobile’ restaurant, whilst body and soul are restored to balance through indulgent treatments or massages at the Mcely Bouquet Spa, which uses the hotel’s own natural, hand-blended Mcely Bouquet skincare products. All this is complemented by private relaxation in the sauna and the outdoor hot tub. In summer, swimming in the naturally filtered lake and relaxing at the Mcely Summer Club are particularly popular. The castle also offers access to tennis courts, outdoor fitness facilities, a playground, carriage rides and other amenities.

History

The long history of Château Mcely

Mcely is a picturesque village with authentic historic wooden buildings and a 16th-century Baroque church. It currently has a population of around 300, and the surrounding countryside is a popular recreational area, particularly for people from nearby Prague. And what about the castle itself?

• 1000 BC. As early as 1000 BC, the inhabitants of the Bohemian Basin had built a fortress in this area, and the ancient Celts left visible traces near Mcely

• 1252 The first reliable evidence of the existence of a settlement with the unusual Old Bohemian name Mcely is found in an old parchment document dating from 1252.

• In 1653, Count Jan Kristian von Valdštejn built the first castle on Vinice Hill.

• In 1808, Baron Jan Filip Wessenberg-Ampringen acquired the castle.

• 1841 The dilapidated Baroque castle was rebuilt as a new residence in a strict Neoclassical style. Jindrich, the son of Baron Jan Filip Wessenberg-Ampringen, moved into the castle with his family. The estate remained in the family’s possession until 1859.

• 1849: According to old records, nine years before a similar event in Lourdes, the Virgin Mary appeared to three little girls in the small meadow between Mcely Castle and the church. A series of reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary is known as the ‘Mcely Miracles’.

• 1863 From 1863 to 1869, numerous members of Count Boos-Waldeck’s family lived at the castle

• 1869 In 1869, Count Filip Boos-Waldeck sold the Château Mcely estate to Prince Hugo Maxmilian of the Thurn-Taxis noble family, whose main residence was in nearby Loučeň. The prince and his descendants remained the owners of Château Mcely until 1948. To this day, stories are told of the young Thurn-Taxis family’s extravagant celebrations, of hunts on horseback with hounds, and of glittering parties featuring ballet dancers and actresses, as well as of kennels, racing stables and all the luxuries of aristocratic life at that time.

• 1903 The west wing of the castle had to be demolished due to its dilapidated foundations. When Prince Erich Thurn-Taxis married Countess Gabriela Kinsky, costly renovation work was required on the castle. The family lived at Mcely Castle until 1925.

• 1939 Following the death of Prince Alexandre Jan, Château Mcely became the family home and administrative centre of his grandson, Prince Luigiho della Torre e Tasso, and his wife, Fanny Goodyear.

• 1948 Château Mcely was used by the Foreign Office and the Home Office. The château fell into disrepair.

• 2004 On 15 June, Inéz and James Cusumano began the extensive and comprehensive renovation of Château Mcely.

• In 2006, Château Mcely opened its doors to its first guests.

• 2010: Renovation of the other half of the park and opening of the MCELY BOUQUET SPA.
