Overview

The natural paradise at 1000m above sea level

The LANDSCAPE with the Samaranger and Fernstein lakes is one of the most extraordinary natural beauties of Tyrol. The romantic islands, the quiet forests and the clear mountain creeks were voted the most beautiful places in Tyrol by the viewers of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation ORF.
The privately owned Schloss Fernsteinsee high above its blue-green lake, is the best setting imaginable. Documented since 1519, Fernstein has hosted the most noble guests over the centuries, including Siegmund "der Münzreiche", Emperor Maximilian I + II and Empress Maria Theresia.

Today, the owner family and their team ensure the guests' well-being. The fresh mountain air awakens the spirits, the exhilarating views and sights of nature and the pleasant sunbathing lawns ensure the best possible relaxation of body, mind and soul.
The historic castle has a new life as a warm and comfortable hotel.
Enjoy 19 beautifully furnished rooms, 4 flats and 8 suites with 4* comfort in a traditional atmosphere.

Our hotel reception is open from Monday to Sunday from 08:00 to 12:00 and from 12:30 to 22:00. We look forward to your enquiry.

History

Already a popular place to rest with the Romans

As early as Roman times, an important road connection ran over the Fernpass. Even then, there was an opportunity to rest and change horses at the ideally located Fernsteinsee.  The remains of this Roman road are still visible to this day. In the Middle Ages, the Fernpaß road was also one of the most important trade routes from Germany to Italy.

The Castle

The oldest part of the castle is first mentioned in the 12th century. In 1288 Vernstein (also called Stein am Fern) was built as a sovereign fortification. In 1451, Duke Sigmund had the original complex generously extended and a castle chapel built at the same time. In 1543, the road was relocated and now ran directly under the Klausen building. In 1552 Fernstein defended itself against the Elector Moritz of Saxony, who is said to have been held up here for 36 hours. Fernstein Castle was given a ceiling with several portraits and beautiful stucco work on its second upper floor in 1720-1725. The portraits show Emperor Joseph I with his wife Amalie of Brunswick-Lüneburg.
In 1780, the castle and its lands became private property and have since formed a single unit as Hotel Schloss Fernsteinsee.

History of Sigmundburg Castle

In 1478, Duke Sigmund der Münzreiche had a hunting lodge built for himself in the Gothic style with four corner towers on the island located in Lake Fernstein. The hunting lodge soon became his favourite place to stay.
In the 16th century, the hunting lodge became inaccessible. From then on, Fernstein Castle was used as the residence of the ducal castle custodian.
