Overview

Welcome to Johnby Hall

Johnby Hall is a wonderful and charming family- and dog-friendly place to stay, whether you
want to take a week to explore the Lake District or just stop off on the road to or from
Scotland.

If you’re looking for a good night’s sleep, rest assured! The memory foam mattress on the
king-size bed is so comfy that guests sometimes go straight off and buy one for themselves.
The family bedroom also has two single beds provided with memory foam mattresses;
there’s a separate sitting room where parents of younger children can relax while the little
ones go to sleep. Breakfast is served in the sixteenth-century Great Hall, with home-grown
free-range bacon, sausages and eggs, and home-made bread and jams and local honey.

Steeped in history, has been home to the Howard family for over two centuries. On the edge
of the Lake District National Park, amidst the fields and woods of a traditional upland farming
estate in the tranquil heart of rural Cumbria, it is still less than fifteen minutes from the M6
motorway.

The garden is a delight to wander in; Children love to share the playhouses, swings and
other garden toys, and make friends with the chickens and pigs. Come in February/March to
see snowdrops, or April/May for the wild daffodils; the roses are at their best in June, and the
autumn colors bring their magic to the orchard and garden in October/November. Dogs run
off-lead in several acres of adjacent woodlands. The garden and woods are home to all sorts
of birdlife and deer and there’s a good chance of seeing a rare native red squirrel!
Henry and Anna are both musicians and love hearing guests playing the piano in the Great
Hall.

History

A manor house steeped in history

Johnby Hall will appeal to anyone with a passion for history and English country life. The house originated in the mid-14th century as a Pele tower, fortified to protect against Scottish raiders. The date above the front door reads 1583, and the house has changed little since then—apart from a loving Arts and Crafts restoration by Great-Aunt Maud around 1900.
The casually designed gardens include a 17th-century walled orchard, impressive 17th- and 18th-century barns, and the fascinating remains of an old water garden and several terraces. In 1783, Johnby Hall was acquired by the 10th Duke of Norfolk, whose ancestors had been landowners in the parish since the Middle Ages. The property has remained in the Howard family ever since.
The guest rooms are in a 17th-century wing, long known as Kelly Cottage, which retains many charming historical details. Guests climb a unique, vaulted spiral staircase to have breakfast in the old Great Hall of the manor house.
