Overview

Modern design behind historic walls

After a very elaborate restoration, the Weisses Kreuz townhouse is now back to what it owes to its unique location in the historic centre of Salzburg's city: Timelessness for centuries to come. With this in mind, the owner, in collaboration with the Belgian art collector and interior designer Axel Vervoordt, rebuilt the Weisses Kreuz using the best local craftsmen.
The combination of careful renovation and the demand for the highest level of living comfort make the historic Weisses Kreuz townhouse a unique property in Salzburg's old town.

History

The 'Bierjodl-house'

First mentioned in the Salzburg city register in 1329, the building on the slopes of the Festungsberg was then located in the working-class quarter of the cathedral district. In the 15th century, money changer Ulrich Samer lived here. He adapted his residence—whose origins are said to date back as far as the 11th century—to provide housing for the three chaplains serving in the Samer Chapel.

From 1682 onwards, the house belonged to several "Bierzapfler" (today called innkeepers). Matthias Grill, innkeeper from 1719 to 1754, was one of them and gave the name to the alley in front of the house. He probably had the nickname "Jodl" (derived from Jodok). The property was named "Bierjodlhaus" in his honour. Finally, the name was transferred to the alley in the 18th century and since then it has been called "Bierjodlgasse".
The name Weisses Kreuz goes back to the 16th century. Ever since Margaretha Waldherr, widow of Rochus Waldherr, received the first licence to tap beer in 1687, beer has been served under this name.

From the 1950s onwards an innkeeper's family, including a Croatian major, ran a restaurant serving Balkan specialities. The upper floors were used to rent out guest rooms. In a short time, the restaurant developed into a popular meeting place, among others for the celebrities of the time from culture, politics and sports.
The property was sold to the current owner in 2012, who decided to return it to its origins.
