    Overview

Where hospitality meets viticulture and history

Tenuta Marchesi Alfieri is a historic winery in Piedmont with a magnificent view of the UNESCO World Heritage regions of Langhe, Roero and Monferrato. As descendants of the Alfieri family, the three sisters Emanuela, Antonella and Giovanna San Martino di San Germano are now in charge of this wonderful estate. Through loving restorations, innovative winemaking and a new approach, they are writing a new chapter in the careful preservation of the estate's historic heritage.

The San Martino family's enthusiasm for the castle, the listed gardens and the renowned winery can be felt in every part of this special property.

    The winery in the castle

The story goes that when the three sisters stood in front of their first 10,000 bottles in 1989, they asked themselves: "And who will drink them all now"? This is how a new chapter of the Marchesi Alfieri winery began.
Individual wine tastings and a guided tour of the Marchesi Alfieri winery are a must and can be organised on request. The Marchesi Alfieri wines are now among the most famous Barbera d'Asti DOCG in Piedmont and can be purchased directly from the farm. The well-tended vineyards also produce Nebbiolo, Grignolino and Pinot Noir, as well as the sparkling Metodo Classico Blanc de Noir.

    History

    The Royal Engineer's Castle

The history of the village of San Martino Alfieri dates back to the Middle Ages. It began to flourish in 1696, when the ruins of the military fortress were converted into a baroque castle by the noble Alfieri familyand the wine cellars were built.
The Marchesi Alfieri estate reflects the refined charm of the aristocratic Italian countryside in its blend of history, nature and architecture. The centrepiece of the estate is the baroque castle, which was built between 1696 and 1721 by the royal engineer Antonio Bertola and extended by the orangery designed by the royal architect Benedetto Alfieri in the 18th century. The orangery, which is known for its unique curved shape, features refined stucco decorations. The halls are guarded by busts of the most famous members of the Alfieri family and important guests of the estate, including the royal family of Savoy.

The park designed in 1815 by the architect Xavier Kurten in the style of an English garden, extends over 5 hectares and is bordered by a monumental oak tree and a variety of trees, roses and other flowers that have been planted over the centuries. The fragrant lemon trees at the entrance to the château form the charm of the place and extend to the maturing cellar, which is housed in the impressive historic stables, and to the oak barrel cellar under the orangery.

The castle of the Marchesi Alfieri family, built in 1721 and situated between Alba and Asti, impresses with its neo-baroque style, the wonderful view over the vineyards to the north-east and its idyllic park.
Another special feature is the orangery, where various citrus fruits still thrive in winter.
There is also the opportunity to visit the winery with its old vaulted cellar and the 250 barrique barrels used to refine the wines.
The rooms are furnished in Italian style and breakfast can be enjoyed on the terrace when the weather is fine.
Thank you very much for the stay, I will come back!
