History

In the same family for more than 100 years

The castle was first mentioned in historical records in 1185, with a reference to Dietmar von Wasserberg. Another prominent member of this lineage was Heinrich von Wasserberg, the brother-in-law of the Minnesinger Ulrich von Liechtenstein, in the early 13th century. In 1283, Otto von Haslau and Wulfing von Arnstein were mentioned as Lords of Wasserburg. Shortly thereafter, the castle came into the possession of the Puchberger family through marriage.
In 1515, Christoph von Toppel sold Wasserburg, along with several other properties, to Christoph von Zinzendorf. For nearly 400 years, Wasserburg remained the family seat of the Zinzendorf family and later the Baudissin-Zinzendorf lineage. After the death of Karl von Zinzendorf in 1813, the estate passed to Heinrich August Count von Baudissin, who adopted the name and coat of arms of the Zinzendorf family. In 1912, the Baudissin-Zinzendorf-Pottendorf family sold the property to Count Heinrich Fünfkirchen. In 1915, the castle temporarily served as a convalescent home for soldiers. In 1923, Carl Hugo Count von Seilern und Aspang purchased the Wasserburg estate, which remains in the family's possession to this day.
