    History

    History of the castle

The Renaissance castle of Walpersdorf was built in 1571 by Hans Ulrich von Ludmanstorf and subsequently taken over by Helmhard VIII Freiherr von Jörger, whose son finally completed the construction of the castle in 1619. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle went to Empress Eleonora Gonzaga. She converted the castle chapel to a Catholic place of worship.

After the death of the empress, Georg Ludwig von Sinzendorf received the castle, extended the southern part of it and set up a silk factory in the "Rittersaal" built between 1667 and 1671. This hall building is considered today to be the first factory building in Austria. After his death, his widowed wife had to sell the complex to Ludwig Count Colloredo-Wallsee, who bequeathed it to his daughter Maria Antonia Josefa Montecuccoli.
From 1859 to 1956, the castle was owned by the Falkenhayn family. Marie Countess Falkenhayn finally donated Walpersdorf Castle together with other estates to the Order of the Missionary Sisters of St. Peter Claver. The castle was badly damaged during the Second World War, but was subsequently repaired and restored. Until 2014, the castle was inhabited by the Missionary Sisters and was sold to the Lederleitner family in the same year.
