Do something good for your soul

A stay at Schloss Schmarsow offers a unique blend of historic charm, modern comfort and a commitment to sustainability. The individually designed apartments in the castle combine timeless elegance with thoughtful amenities. Each apartment is a little sanctuary: stylishly furnished with spacious living areas, bedrooms, modern bathrooms and fully equipped kitchenette – perfect for a relaxing short break or an extended stay.

The surrounding estate invites you to unwind and let your soul relax: the expansive castle garden with its old fruit trees, sun loungers and a barbecue area offers numerous opportunities for leisure. Guests can enjoy fresh fruit straight from the trees or simply savor the tranquility and the views of the surrounding nature and the Tollensetal valley. For more active recreation, nearby destinations such as the Zarrenthiner Kiessee for swimming, riding stables and canoe stations provide the perfect setting for a varied and engaging leisure experience.

Particularly noteworthy is the castle’s sustainable approach: a photovoltaic system, wood gasification heating, and rainwater harvesting provide environmentally friendly energy. Pesticide-free gardens and the careful use of natural materials further highlight the hosts’ ecological commitment.

Your stay will be rounded off by special experiences such as cooking classes with renowned chefs, concert evenings in the impressive Eickstedtsaal hall or a glass of wine in the historic castle kitchen. Schloss Schmarsow is not just a place to stay, but a place that inspires, slows down and creates lasting memories.

Cavalier House at Schloss Schmarsow

Located just across the street from the castle, the single-story Cavalier House with a hipped roof was built in 1796 to accommodate guests of the estate. Until 1945, the estate steward, Mr. Schröder, lived here, and after the war, farm workers from the village of Schmarsow’s “Agricultural Production Cooperative” (LPG) resided in the house. The Cavalier House features a gas central heating system and has been completely renovated. An adjoining garden with lush flowers, a small playground, and a transition into an orchard make this house particularly attractive for large families and groups. The house offers 130 m² of living space, including three bedrooms each with a double bed and one bedroom with a single bed. The rooms can be accessed separately but are also interconnected. Additionally, there is a kitchen with a large dining table, two bathrooms with showers—one of which includes a washing machine—and a separate WC. The kitchen is equipped with a stove with ceramic cooktop and oven, sink, dishwasher, refrigerator, countertop, and cabinets. Crockery, kitchen utensils, bed linen and towels are at your disposal.

History

Built in 1697 by Philipp Joachim von Parsenow

Schmarsow Castle, a Baroque gem in the heart of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, was built in 1697 by Philipp Joachim von Parsenow, presumably on the foundations of a medieval manor house. The architecture of the castle impresses with its clear symmetries, spacious rooms, an elegant façade that represents the Baroque architectural style of the region, and its characteristic castle-like charm, which has been preserved to this day. A renovation in 1796 focused in particular on modernising the building, including the installation of the so-called ‘black kitchen’ to replace the kitchen house to the east.

The eventful history of the castle is reflected in its walls: after World War II, it initially served as accommodation for over 360 refugees, and later as a cultural meeting place and retail outlet. With its purchase by the current owners in 2000, a new era began. With great attention to detail and in accordance with heritage preservation standards, the historic structures were restored—from the original windows and doors to the magnificent reception rooms. Today, Schloss Schmarsow stands as an impressive example of how historic architecture can be thoughtfully combined with modern comfort.
