Overview

Enjoy a delightful holiday

Reichstädt Castle is located in the heart of Reichstädt, a district of the town of Dippoldiswalde – just 21 kilometres south of Dresden and only 3 kilometres from Dippoldiswalde. Nestled in the charming landscape of the Eastern Ore Mountains, the castle combines rural idyll with a location close to the town.

Stay here in an extraordinary setting and enjoy heavenly tranquillity. Each of the four lovingly furnished suites has its own unique character – inspired by the eventful history of the building and designed with a keen sense of style and authenticity.

The elaborately and carefully revitalised castle will thrill you as much as the extensive gardens. Today, the castle grounds present themselves as a harmonious composition of Baroque design and English landscape park. Precious trees and shrubs – including a tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera), which is extremely rare in Germany – lend the ensemble its unmistakable, almost fairy-tale charm.

Every first Sunday of the month (from April to October), guided tours of the castle (approx. 40 minutes) are offered at 3 p.m. Admission is €5, children are free.

Zar-Alexander-Suite

The suite, decorated in elegant shades of green and overlooking the orangery, is a stylish tribute to Reichstädt's most famous guest – Tsar Alexander I of Russia, who took up residence in the castle in 1813 during his campaign for the Battle of Leipzig.

Facilities: Bathroom with shower, separate toilet

Maria-Theresia-Suite

Rosé and gold tones lend this suite an imperial elegance, reminiscent of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. A baroque white grandfather clock – once a gift from the Empress to the lord of the castle – bears witness to imperial history and suggests that she herself stayed here as an illustrious guest.

Facilities: Bathroom with corner bath, WC

Euphrosina-Suite

This sky blue suite is a stylish tribute to the Italian-born woman of the same name who resided in the castle at the end of the 19th century and had numerous rooms decorated in her favourite colour, sky blue – a touch of Mediterranean lifestyle that still characterises the atmosphere today.

Facilities: Bathroom with walk-in shower, WC

Generalpostmeister-Suite

This stately suite, embellished with exquisite fresco paintings, pays homage to Postmaster General Adam Rudolf von Schönberg, whose bust still adorns the castle courtyard today. It invites visitors to pause, soak up the history and take a stylish break.

Facilities: Bathroom with freestanding bathtub, WC

History

800 years of history

The Schönberg family has been rooted in the Margraviate of Meissen for over 800 years – an impressive tradition that continues to shape Reichstädt Castle to this day. As early as the 13th and 14th centuries, the family von Reichstädt had a manor house here. Around 1500, Sigismund von Maltitz acquired the estate and had it converted into a magnificent complex.

In 1569, the castle became the property of Augustus, Elector of Saxony, who used it as a hunting lodge. After several changes of ownership, the estate came into the family's possession in 1717 through the marriage of Abraham von Schönberg. His son, Postmaster General Adam Rudolf von Schönberg, gave the castle its distinctive appearance in 1776 with the addition of the impressive west wing.

The year 1813 marked a glorious chapter in the town's history when Tsar Alexander I of Russia took up residence here.

After being expropriated between 1945 and 1998, the castle is now back in the possession of the Schönberg family. With great care and passion, Reichstädt Castle is being continuously restored and carefully brought into the present day – as a living place full of history, elegance and hospitality.
