Pichl Castle is situated on a small hill at 876 metres above sea level in the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park in Styria, near Neumarkt. The 16th-century castle offers peace and quietness in the beautiful hilly landscape, plenty of space and comfortable accommodation within historic walls.
From late April to late October , the hotel is open with 20 renovated rooms and 2 castle apartments awaiting you.
Until the end of April onwards, you can enjoy self-catering in the castle apartment ‘Schmadl’ or the castle suite ‘Weitblick’ (bookable for 6 nights or more).
Schmadl – for 2 – 4 people, approx. 65m²
‘Weitblick’ – for 2 – 10 people, approx. 240m² (entire floor of the castle).

‘We serve fresh, regional products,’ explains the owner and hotel manager, Katrin Heindl. ‘We have meat, fish, salad, herbs, eggs, cheese and juices from our own biodiverse production and we also work with local farmers.’

Katrin Heindl is a firm believer in holistic well-being: from nutrition and exercise to forest bathing. The Hotel Landsitz Pichlschloss offers a wonderful range of options for your health, creative and time-out holidays. To make sure everyone feels completely at ease, massages and wellness treatments are available in-house. After long hikes, the wood-heated Finnish sauna, an infrared cabin, a herbal steam bath and the barefoot trail with Kneipp basin are available.

Schmadl: November to the end of April: €250 per night, including heating/electricity and weekly cleaning. The main house is closed during this period, so no catering is available. Bread/roll/newspaper delivery is available on request.3 extra beds: one-time linen fee of € 20/person

Dogs are welcome: €20/night – dog bed and bowls provided.
The ‘Schmadl’ is ideal for guests who are looking for a special atmosphere for their holiday - comfortable and modern ambience combined with the charm of the vault and protective walls. We have taken great care to create a pleasant, cosy living space through careful adaptation and the use of natural materials. A private entrance and the small terrace with loungers provide undisturbed holidays. The Schmadl faces east and south - warming sunrays accompany you throughout the day!

The table in the sunny bay window is ideal for working or eating.

Bedroom with bathroom: the electricity isolation switch in the bedroom ensures a carefree, undisturbed night's sleep. The bright bathroom is equipped with a bathtub with shower.

The entire floor consists of the castle apartment ‘Weitblick’, the castle hall, 2 double rooms and the terrace. It is ideal for guests who want to spend their holidays with family or friends in a spacious living environment - comfortable, cosy ambience combined with the charm of protective walls. We have tried very hard to create a pleasant, spacious living space through careful adaptation and the use of natural materials. The apartment is on the second floor of the Pichlschloss, with a beautiful view of the valley. The east-, south- and west-facing windows let the sun accompany you from sunrise to sunset.In the centrally located castle hall, you can dine at the long refectory table; the fully equipped kitchen and small pantry are right nextdoor.
The small living room has a table in the sunny bay window, a comfortable couch that can be converted into a double bed if necessary, and a TV.

The renowned writer Thomas Bernhard visited Pichlschloss on multiple occasions.
The history of the Pichl Castle is very colourful. After World War I, it served as a sanatorium for lung diseases, thanks to the excellent air quality and the castle's location in the middle of a beautiful green area. The wooden treatment hall built at that time still exudes a protective, healing warmth today.
MeMemories ofrThomas Mann’s famous book, “The Magic Mountain”, are quickly awakened. Thomas Bernhard, der einige Male im Pichlschloss weilte, genoss diese Atmosphäre und die frische Waldluft.
The residence of the Pichler family
The castle developed from a small nobleman’s residence, first mentioned in 1332 as Puhlern bei dem Newenmarcht. After several changes of ownership, the estate became a farmstead in the first half of the 16th century. With substantial building work, Bartlme Haslinger, who was knighted as a deserving official by King Ferdinand I in 1543, made Pichlschloss a property that befitted a Renaissance nobleman.
From 1625 to 1776 the Pichler family held the castle through succession and gave the castle its name.
Many of the building’s architectural details are still visible to this day as a characteristic, preserved residence of the lesser nobility in the 16th and 17th century. The richly ornamented Renaissance entrance indicates a significant phase of expansion under Bartlme Haslinger around 1569. The Renaissance and early baroque arches and flat ceilings illustrate the hierarchical structure of an early modern seat of nobility.
For three generations (since 1926) the owner family has run it as a small and very personally managed hotel.
This year we celebrate 100 years of Pichlschloss in the family—a small milestone, bringing us joy and deep gratitude!
