History

A turbulent manorial history between Saxony and Prussia

Directly opposite the charming and culturally significant church of Pitschen lies the former Pitschen Manor House. This late Baroque plastered building with an impressive hipped roof was constructed in the 18th century, at that time owned by the von Maltitz family. However, the manorial estate of Pitschen, which at times encompassed over 600 hectares of land, is older and dates back at least to 1527, when the brothers Dietrich and Hans von Stauchwitz purchased the village of Pitschen along with its church fief. Interestingly, in the 16th century, Pitschen was required to provide a mounted soldier as part of its knightly duties. The subsequent noble owners, as was common for many knightly estates in Lower Lusatia, frequently changed. Notably, even King Frederick II of Prussia intervened in a letter on behalf of his Major Ludwig Clamor Friedrich von Oppen, addressing the Saxon King Augustus II: “to pardon him generously and to instruct the aforementioned government [Pitschen belonged to Electoral Saxony] to invest him with this estate (…)”. With this, Frederick requested that Elector Augustus allow his officer to retain the estate despite any feudal irregularities.

In 1836, Senior District Officer Ludwig Schlesinger acquired the estate. He remodeled the house in a Neoclassical style, and parts of the plaster façade from this period are still preserved. With this acquisition, Pitschen established a close connection to Schloss Uckro (destroyed in 1945), the main residence of the Schlesinger family, with Pitschen serving as the administrator’s seat. As a manor owner, Ludwig Schlesinger was ennobled in 1865 and elevated to the Prussian nobility. From then on, the family bore the name "von Uckro" and remained the estate’s owners until its expropriation in 1945.

After 1945, the manor house served as accommodation for displaced persons and, during the GDR period, was initially used as a rental property, later housing a retail store and a kindergarten. Following a long period of vacancy, the current owners took over the property in 2018 and have been renovating it with dedication and creativity. The result is a charming, individually designed place that exudes art and literature—a passion of the owners that they are happy to share with their guests.
