    History

A place close to nature with a long family tradition since 1097

Established in 1097, The Broughton Hall Estate has been home to the Tempest family for over 900 years and enjoys a rich history stretching back over the millennium. Designed by Andrew Nesfield the historic formal gardens studded with statues, ponds, parterres and fountains offer a glimpse of 18th century fashion.

The Tempest family are believed to have come to England from Normandy during William the Conqueror’s 1066 invasion of England and were given land in the aftermath of the invasion.

    Family-owned for 32 generations

The Tempests are one of England’s oldest Catholic landed gentry families. Roger Tempest, the current custodian of Broughton Sanctuary is the 32nd Tempest in a recorded line dating from the 11th century.

The Estate is a thriving example of how we can constantly transform and evolve by learning from the past and taking the best of what we have into the future. It is this philosophy that is behind our recent name change from Broughton Hall Estate to Broughton Sanctuary. We feel this better represents our vision and mission to be a regenerative space that is rooted in the nature and wellbeing of both humanity and the planet.
