History

A castle dating back to the 11th century

Schloss Stein in the Drava Valley has majestically overlooked Upper Carinthia since the 12th century and is closely tied to the historic mining of the Jauken. First mentioned in 1190, it has been home to notable families including the Ortenburgs, the Counts of Cilli and from 1500 the Lords of Graben, who carried out magnificent renovations. A highlight of the castle is the Romanesque-Gothic double chapel, adorned with frescoes by Simon of Taisten. Owned by the Orsini-Rosenberg family since the 17th century, Schloss Stein today remains a living cultural monument, where history, elegance and natural beauty come together.
