Overview

Imperial Slowing Down

This small, elegant castle hotel, located directly on the beautiful Millstättersee in Carinthia, combines culinary delights with a historical, cozy ambience. The See-Villa is particularly popular as a wedding and celebration location because of its incredibly beautiful location right on the lake. The restaurant, which has been awarded by Falstaff, spoils its guests with freshly caught fish, game from our own hunt, herbs from our own garden and many regional products and specialties. And after the party, you can relax and fall asleep in one of the historic rooms.

Due to the history and age of the castle hotel, its most striking feature is the diversity of the rooms: no two rooms are alike and every space and every piece of furniture has its own history. Many of the furniture origin from 1884. This composition gives the guest a unique, homely feeling that still makes the house so unique today.

The See-Villa offers plenty of opportunities as relaxation on the private beach, water sports, garden games, golf on the nearby golf course, cultural highlights (theatres, concerts, exhibitions) directly in Millstatt and the surrounding area and various themed weeks, such as bridge holidays, wine and enjoyment by the lake, fasting by the lake, classic car, vehicle and motorbike meets. Dinner with the host, Count Tacoli, is also possible.

History

“It is a raw, wild nest…”

In 1870 Austrian writer Ferdinand Kürnberger (1821-1879) described Lake Millstatt as the most beautiful lake in Carinthia, but he described Millstatt as “a place consisting only of ruins, with no heart, no outward appearance, no market place, no square in front of the church, a formless, desolate cowshed – a place flung on a foothill like a curd thrown at a wall and, to make matters worse, with not a single pub.” What Ferdinand Kürnberger did not know was that he was visiting Millstatt on the day of the cattle drive.

14 years later (in 1884), Millstatt became a hotspot of the day, when the first hotel, See-Villa, opened directly on the lake. Rudolf Schürer von Waldheim, a Bohemian glass industry magnate and great-great-grandfather of the present owner, had See-Villa built by the famous architects Mayereder & Köchlin. Shortly after the hotel was completed, it was visited by Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria (younger brother of Emperor Franz-Josef), who stayed in room number 10.
Unlike Kürnberger, archduke Karl Ludwig described See-Villa and the town as “a place to rest, enjoy and return.”
The opening of the hotel heralded the tourist boom of Millstatt, making it one of the top attractions in Carinthia.
