A barbecue area for lovely evenings in the garden or a small houseboat with a rowing boat on the pond are at your disposal and offer opportunities for pleasant hours in nature. Right next door, there is a paddock with shelter for up to four horses, so feel free to bring your own horses.

Poggelow Castle once belonged to the great noble family of Bassewitz. The noble family of Poggelow Castle made a reputation for themselves through courageous, chivalrous service and later diplomatic service for the king, which extended as far as England, Stockholm, Copenhagen and St. Petersburg. This history is documented in the castle's coat of arms.

In 2017, the façade was restored and repainted in accordance with the regulations for the protection of historical monuments. A large hall can accommodate up to 22 people, for nice evenings and large celebrations. You will also find a small room with a fireplace, a tea room with a TV, and a larger, separate kitchen.
In the basement, you will find a fitness room, a sauna, a house bar with a fireplace, as well as table football, a table tennis room and a billiards room.

From here you can also reach the large, private, always heated indoor swimming pool with a beautiful view into the garden. A washing machine and a tumble dryer are also available for your use.

The apartments are spread over three floors and all have their own small kitchenette, bath/WC, and most have their own living room. This offers all residents the opportunity for privacy and retreat.

Poggelow Castle is the perfect place for stylish celebrations with family and/or friends. The spacious surroundings offer restful tranquillity and a certain degree of self-sufficiency that is only appreciated by those who have had enough of the hustle and bustle of the big cities.

From the castle, you can reach Rostock, Wismar, Greifswald and Stralsund in about an hour. Or you drive to Schwerin (1 hour) and visit the old, grand castles. The beach on the Baltic Sea is only 40 minutes away.

History

The history of Poggelow Castle

The small castle of Poggelow was built around 1848 according to the plans of the architect Friedrich Hintzig, a well-known student of the now world-famous master builder Schinkel. Friedrich Hintzig also designed other castles in the Tudor-Gothic style, only some of which could be restored in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Other historical monuments built in the Tudor style at that time are Babelsberg Palace, as well as the resort architecture in Heiligendamm, which was influenced by this style.

At that time, Germany was trying to achieve national unity. After the Prussian reforms, a new elite emerged not only in the emerging bourgeoisie, but also in the ranks of nobility, seeking national unity, but also against the stuffiness of provincialism and particularism. It was a time when true masterpieces of national culture were created, which even today are still to be preserved, restored and protected. It is out of this cultural and historical interest that Hellberg-Domizil has specialised in such monumental holiday properties of history.

This period left its impact on literature, art and architecture. Poggelow Castle demonstrats this period of change with its English-style elements.

The Bassewitz family at the Russian and Swedish courts
From 1848 to 1891, the castle was owned by the well-known Bassewitz family. Even in those days, the Bassewitz family was one of the most prominent families in Mecklenburg. From the early days of the Hanseatic League until well into the Middle Ages, the Bassewitz family developed strong relations with Sweden and some of its members entered Swedish service.

The family also established early and strong connections with the Russian imperial court. Henning-Friedrich von Bassewitz visited the court of Peter the Great in St. Petersburg several times. The development of trade with Sweden, Denmark, the rest of the Baltic Sea region and England contributed significantly to the prosperity of the northern German cities and districts. At Poggelow Castle, you can experience history and contribute effectively and sustainably to the preservation of such nobel estates.

The Legend of Knight Bassewitz
According to the legend, in 1411, a knight by the name of Bassewitz went to war against the town of Kyritz. He wanted to conquer the town with a whole band of warriors. He had a trench dug below the town wall in order to gain access to the town. However, the citizens of the town noticed this ruse and killed the knight as he came to the surface. This story was even made into a play in the 19th century called ‘Kurt v. Bassewitz or the saved Kyritz’. The annual ‘Bassewitz Festival’ is still celebrated in Kyritz today. If you happen to be at the castle at that time, it is definitely worth visiting!

A reproduction of the knight's armour and the battle axe with which the knight was slain can still be found at Poggelow Castle today. Hellberg-Domizil places great value on the historically accurate furnishing of the castles in a modern and cosy mix. Experience the history of Poggelow Castle and this architectural masterpiece up close.

The coat of arms of Poggelow Castle
The coat of arms of Poggelow Castle is significantly influenced by the family coat of arms of the von Bassewitz family. Its history goes back to the Middle Ages. In a collection of poems entitled ‘Wappensagen’ (Legend of the Coat of Arms), the poet George Hesekiel also provided an animalistic interpretation of the Bassewitz family coat of arms. It describes how a Mecklenburg prince was saved. The knight Bernd von Bassewitz followed the trail of a wild boar and saved the prince from the fray. In the poet's words, the prince praised this deed:

‘The best joke in Mecklenburg,
The Bassewitz shall apply.
For he helped his princes through,
When enemies surrounded him.
And his silver shield, too,
should show a jumping boar
And glory shall be his such blazon
Still bringing up the grandchildren!’

The core of the coat of arms of Poggelow Castle shows a charging boar. Another unusual element in the coat of arms of Poggelow Castle is a lion. We assume that the lion was implemented in the family coat of arms to symbolise the family's connection to the Swedish crown.

The reason for this is an improvement to the coat of arms, awarded to Adolf Friedrich auf Neuhof, 1681-1740, as a Swedish colonel by the King of England in recognition of his outstanding services to the Swedish crown. Adolf Friedrich auf Neuhof was the diplomat who brokered the peace agreement between Sweden and England in 1719.
