    Overview

A young winery within old walls

Palazzo Lodron is located in the Adige Valley between Trento and Lake Garda within the small village of Nogaredo. It has been in the same family for 400 years. Therefore it can be considered to be a German-speaking island in the middle of Trentino which until 1918  belonged to Austria.

In 2016, Johannes and Olivia Volpini de Maestri restored the old vineyard to modern, natural standards. Since than, the hand crafted, organic wine is in high demand. The young winery has already won numerous awards.
The age of the building can be sensed deep in the cellar of the palazzo with its massive masonry where the wine is now maturing.
It is possible to have wonderful celebrations within numerous parts of the palazzo. The facilities available include:

The Hall, known for its great acoustics, is the centre of the house. A marble hall that provides an elegant setting for any occasion. It has an impressive fireplace in the centre, family portraits on the walls, a large south-facing window leads to a balcony. (for 100-150 guests).

The Dining Room is suited to smaller formal dinners with a long table. Looking down from the ceiling fresco is hero and Landsknecht soldier Ludovico Lodron (for 35-40 guests).

The Salotto is a cozy room with original timber flooring, a wooden balcony and a historic tiled stove as well as antique furniture (for 40-50 guests).

The carriage entrance, also known as Androne, is a 16th-century vaulted room with a splendid ambiance especially by candlelight (for 100-120 guests).

Characterised by a dark marble fireplace and the family coat of arms above it, the Old Library is particularly suited to more intimate occasions. This is also where the wine tasting sessions take place.

The owners are very happy to open the Palazzo for guided tours and to recount the history of the family and the estate.
For wine lovers, a tour of the house is available with the wine tasting.

    History

Operating table as a work table

At the end of the 16th century, Conte Nicolo Lodron laid the foundation for the present ensemble. His son Paris, prince archbishop of Salzburg, expanded the Palazzo into a magnificent summer residence. This was done by architect Santino Solari, who also completed the cathedral in Salzburg, fortified the city and designed Hellbrunn Palace. In many details one feels, that the same hands were at work here as in Salzburg Cathedral.

The Palazzo in its present form dates from the time of Count Paris Lodron, around 1620 and the private house chapel was consecrated in 1627.
Unfortunately, this was also the period of the infamous Nogaredo witch trials which took place in the great hall. The counts of Lodron held blood court in the region and the tragic executions therefore took place in the neighbouring village of Brancolino.

About 150 years later, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart dedicated three works to the Lodron family, who were very fond of him: two pieces of Lodron Night Music (two divertimenti) and a short concerto for three pianos. It was therefore clear that one of the wines must be named after this: Divertimento no. 10.
The First World War raged terribly in Trentino – a human tragedy in a veritable fratricidal war. The Palazzo was hit by two bombs during this period. In the meantime, the house served as an ammunition depot and later, during the Second World War, as an American military hospital - the operating table of that time now functions as a work table in the catering kitchen.
Numerous stories about the house and its former inhabitants can be told for nights on end, such as those from the adventurous life of Josephine Lodron (the grandmother of the current owner), of espionage surrounding László Almsásy, of Locarno and Cannes and of Parisian artists and Swedish diplomats surrounding Raoul Wallenberg.
