    Overview

A paradise with 80,000 square metres of pure nature

As the name suggests, this extraordinary holiday residence is located on an idyllic car-free island - in the middle of Austria's southest lake - Lake Faak in Carinthia. You will be daydreaming about this turquoise blue, which meets emerald green at some water points, for a long time to come.

On the terrace of the hotel, where Ludwig Wittgenstein and the Villach chronicler Carl Ghon once sat, our guests are being spoiled with tasty regional and international specialities. A special highlight is the heritage listed bathing complex. Here you can still feel the spirit of the summer resort at the turn of the century and yet enjoy modern comfort.

All rooms and junior suites are provided with lake view, bath or shower, WC, telephone, satellite TV, hairdryer, safe and bathrobe. Many of our double rooms and suites have a balcony facing south or west.

A beach bag, beach towels, parasols and sun beds are at your disposal during your stay.

DOGS: € 20,- per night (without food), not allowed on the beach and in the restaurant for hygiene reasons. Final cleaning for dogs in the room € 40,-.

    History

    Austria's only island hotel

The idyllic island and the crystal-clear Faakersee have had several owners over the centuries, including the Princes of Liechtenstein from 1831. They sold the southernmost lake in Carinthia, including the island, to Ludwig Wittgenstein, an uncle of the famous philosopher of the same name, in 1918.

By inheritance, the estate eventually passed to the Bucher and Catasta families, who also own Landskron Castle, just 15 km away. Today, this Renaissance fortress is one of the most visited sights in Carinthia with knights' dinners, a new bird of prey flying arena and much more (www.burg-landskron.at)

    1877:

Visiting the island was often not easy, as the Villach chronicler Carl Ghon noted as early as 1877: "Visiting the Faaker See island, which is the property of Prince Friedrich Liechtenstein, is unfortunately often made difficult as there are few boats available to tourists on the lake. Visitors should therefore enquire with the farmer in Drobolach about transport to the island or call out loudly to the inhabitants of the island on the northern shore, close to the lake, who will then immediately come with a solidly built boat."

    1906:

In 1906 the farm located on the wooded island became an inn, which soon developed into a popular tourist destination. From 1906, it was possible to stay overnight in the "very well-equipped guest rooms" of the "Wilhelm Schwelle" hotel and use the bathing establishment and boats.

    Today:
there is a telephone at the mooring in Faak am See that guarantees guests of the Faaker island a 24-hour transfer with the only authorised motorboat. The 4-star island hotel on Lake Faak with its 32 rooms  is a perfect place for people who want to leave stress and worries behind (on the mainland).
