    Overview

    In harmony with nature

Sonnegg Manor, which has been owned by the Orsini-Rosenberg family for over 300 years, lies in a picturesque setting at the foot of the Karawanks, 550 m above sea level, nestling between southern Carinthian lakes. The sustainably managed business includes the letting of newly renovated holiday homes as well as forestry, fishery and shooting. The estate is surrounded by 120 ha forests and meadows and all guests will find a place for rest and relaxation in the extensive gardens. The tennis court (sand) is idyllically located in the midst of a meadow with old fruit varieties and there is also a pool for guests to cool off.

The little chapel is open for contemplative meditation as well as small family celebrations such as baptisms.

    Holiday homes – pure idylls

In the three newly renovated apartments for up to four people, guests will find a place to relax in a unique landscape and setting. The region offers countless possibilities for a varied program at any time of year. An extensive network of cycling and walking routes, the nearby lakes and the many sites with interesting cultural history make Sonnegg Manor the ideal starting point for an unforgettable holiday. Or you may wish to relax by the private pool and enjoy the tranquillity and ambience of the estate as a whole. From the large balcony of the holiday homes – with a comfortable dining area – you have a magnificent view over the extensive gardens and on to the Karawanks. For children, there is a large trampoline, swing, slide and sandpit under the trees.

Fishing – diversity from the Drava

The community area with St Paul’s monastery extends over eight kilometres along the right bank of the Drava, by the Völkermarkt reservoir. Fishing here is for carp, pike, catfish, pikeperch and coarse fish as well as crayfish. Fishing licences are available to buy from us.

There are many sports you can practice in the Jaunvalley: skiing, cross-country skiing and mountain biking on Mount Petzen, swimming in the nearby lakes, cycling along the Drava cycle trail, canoeing, hiking in the Karawanks Geopark and many more…

    History

The development of the Sonnegg Castle estate

Thanks to an etching by Johann Baron of Valvasor in 1688, there is an accurate, detailed illustration of the castle buildings of the former Sonnegg Castle. In his descriptions of the castle of Sonnegg’s rulers, he writes of a castle complex on a mountain, comprising a 4-storey main building with numerous towers as well as abundant vineyards, beautiful fields, fish ponds and two good fishing lakes nearby.
From the 12th century the buildings had been built up by different generations and the last magnificent expansion took place in the 15th century under the noble family von Ungnad who subsequently had to leave the country in around 1600.

In 1639 the powerful Count Johann Andrä von Rosenberg bought Sonnegg and added it to the other possessions he had already acquired in Carinthia. The property has been continuously under family ownership ever since.
However, on 4th December 1690, when the Count had just returned from his tour of the estates and was on his way to evening mass, the earth suddenly started to shake. This caused a fire to break out in the castle which it was not possible to extinguish. The castle and neighbouring buildings burned almost completely to the ground. To this day the remains can be seen as ruins on the castle hill above Sonnegg.  As the damage was huge, the owner decided not to rebuild the castle but instead to move to the Sonnegg estate at the foot of the mountain.

    “The seven-man wine”

As Valvasor tells in his descriptions, there were extensive vineyards in the area around Sonnegg (in the present town of Sittersdorf). An ancient vine still grows today, covering the entire south façade of a side building from the estate. It grows so-called Isabella grapes, from which wine is still produced. One story tells that in the 18th century, at the suggestion of the Prince of Rosenberg, the Spanish king was finally cured of his stomach complaint thanks to the wine from Sittersdorf. This wine was also called “seven-man wine”, as it must have been so bitter that anyone who drank the wine had to be held down by seven men.
Don’t worry: it’s not the wine that we serve!
