History

Gina Lollobridgida as a guest

After hunting, Gina Lollobrigida was warming up in the bath in the Blue Room. This room was actually occupied by father-in-law, Kari Traun, who would also have liked to use the bath for himself. The problem-solving earl knocked on the bathroom door so persistently and so long and loud that Gina Lollobrigida had no choice but to get out of the bath and escape to her room via bathroom’s back door. At dinner she then humorously recounted that, for the first time in her life, she had been thrown out of the bathroom by a man whereas normally the men wanted to get into the bath with her.

The unbelievers

Many of the superstars who give live performances here have also stayed at the castle as guests and some have become regulars, e.g. such as Roger Hodgson from Supertramp. The reaction of Canadian-American singer Alanis Morrissette is unforgettable as she could not and would not believe that the castle is really still a home and the lord of the manor had to provide evidence. Only when she opened a wardrobe and saw his sock drawer did Alanis Morrissette finally believe this was not a fake!

A castle endures

The first recorded mention of Clam Castle dates from 1149.
The second major phase of construction took place in the Gothic period when the east wing was built with the “new” castle chapel. Indeed, the castle was never defeated, although it was in very poor condition by 1600. Around 1640, the castle underwent extensive renovation. The farm buildings, stables and coach houses were constructed in the 18th century and they now form the outer courtyard. As time went on the castle was gradually transformed from a fortress into a habitable castle.
