    Sustainable holidays at Heyda Manor

The Heyda manor is a pioneer of sustainability! The ancestor of the current owner family, Hans-Carl von Carlowitz, chief miner in Freiberg, was the inventor of forest management and continuous reforestation in the 18th century, so that future generations could also experience forests and harvest wood.

The von Carlowitz family is still committed to this family heritage today and has been working continuously on the expansion of sustainable agriculture and sustainable accommodation since taking back the property in 1995.

The Heyda manor with its baroque castle is located in the Saxon castle region, on the border of the idyllic Dahlen Heath - that is nature, culture, holidays and enjoyment. This is a getaway with a long history. This is the place, to which the von Carlowitz family has returned and, after the fall of the Wall and the reconstruction, provides historic rooms with modern comfort for wonderful holidays in the countryside. Whether rowing on the own lake, hiking or cycling in the Dahlen Heath or the fascinating Central German culture of Leipzig, Meissen, Dresden and Torgau - the Heyda manor and the Leipzig region have much to offer to its guests.

The family has also implemented this lived sustainability in the renovation of the castle and the outbuildings: terrace wood and pieces of furniture made from their own woods decorate some of the holiday accommodations, which are supplied with solar energy and wooden stoves.
Dwarf chickens and rabbits romp around in the garden and a large herb, fruit and vegetable garden as well as the lake directly in front of the door are available for guests to share.

    The gardener's house

The charmingly decorated Gardener's house has a private and beautifully designed garden and offers a wonderful tranquillity. A wood-burning stove in the kitchen and the fireplace in the living room provide cosy comfort in autumn and winter. Wood is included. The glass roof in the dining room ensures a light-flooded warm atmosphere.

    The Rose Cottage

Living like Sleeping Beauty with a lake view! The former washhouse has had a real metamorphosis. For the renovation, the family mainly used natural building materials. The wood for the façade of the Rose Cottage comes from our own forest and the walls were painted with sandstone paint and natural pigments. The house has two bedrooms, a private terrace, a wood-burning stove and a bathroom with a bathtub.

    The Castle Apartment

Our Castle Apartment on the ground floor of the baroque castle has been renovated in accordance with the preservation guidelines. The von Carlowitz family focused on the stylish and high-quality interior design. In the living room, guests have a magnificent view over the castle's own lake. The floor heating is powered by a wood-burning fireplace, and the free wood store is located right next to the apartment.

    History

The beginning of sustainability at Heyda Manor

A trip to the beginning of sustainability? You read that right! The megatopic of sustainability has its family roots at the Heyda manor between Leipzig and Dresden. In Freiberg in the 18th century, the ancestor Hans-Carl von Carlowitz was a kind of super minister responsible for the supply of raw materials to the increasingly industrialised population and economy in Saxony. At that time, huge quantities of wood were needed for mining, smelting iron ore and for heating. This meant that at that time the forests in Saxony and in large parts of Europe were not only heavily exploited, but literally disappeared. Without wood, there was no mining and no industrialisation. It became his task to ensure that forests were re-established and thus made available to future generations. With the balance of ecology, economy and sociology, the principle of sustainability was born.

A Renaissance castle belonged to the Heyda manor, which was rebuilt in Baroque style in 1698 with the removal of the tower, oriels and gables. It became the property of the von Carlowitz family through marriage in 1858. In autumn 1945, the property was expropriated and divided up. The city of Wurzen set up a children's home in the castle. When asked if he had believed in a return, Georg v. Carlowitz, the senior landlord who died in 2010, replied "I not only thought it was possible, but at the bottom of my heart I thought it was probable and almost certain. Our history teaches us that even bad periods come to an end one day." With this "spirit", the successive rebuilding succeeded after the fall of the Berlin Wall and with the repurchase in 1995.
