A Little House in the Old Town of Tallinn

A unique three-story single family house is located in an easily accessible part of the old town (car parking, port, public transport, airport – everything is nearby). The house has thick limestone walls, part of which is the tower of the medieval city wall of the Tallinn Old Town. Some firing holes and old structures are opening to the rooms, adding to the historic atmosphere as does the huge limestone fireplace. Between the thick stone walls on three floors, you will find romance, silence and peace in the quite busy and noisy Old Town. The doors are opening to two different streets at different heights. One door from the living room opens right next to the highest church in Baltic States – Oleviste, to the Pikk Street, rich in sightseeings. Main entrance opens to the private little garden separated from the well-kept small Scottish Park with the low ornamental steel fence. The 50 m footpath through the park leads to the restaurant Lee indicated in the Michelin Guide. All important sightseeings of Oldtown, the best restaurants in Tallinn are within a short walk. Best possibility to find and enjoy contact with yourself and companions while experiencing a medieval atmosphere. Great for creative retreat.

History

The history of Pikk Street

Pikk Street is a street located in the downtown district of Tallinn's Old Town. It is 723 meters long.

Pikk Street starts from the Pika Jala Gate Tower, which separated Tallinn's lower town and uper town-Toompea, and extends to the Suur Rannavärava, the outer boundary of the Tallinn city wall, located at the original port of Tallinn, and to Rannamäe Road, which intersects with it. Pikk Street is one of the main streets of the medieval old town, running parallel to Laia Street down from Toompea towards the Bay of Tallinn.

The street strantstrate and the buildings on the street were first mentioned in 1362, also referred to as longa strate and longa platea, longa rega (1367). There are 73 properties on the street.

Pikk 62 is located in addition to the street-side building, in the courtyard of the old Tallinn city wall tower Hattorpe-behind tower. The tower was built in the late 14th century - early 15th century. In 1410–1414, there was a Hattorpe among the Tallinn city fathers, and the tower may have been named after him or one of his relatives.

In 1878, architect Rudolf Bernhard, the first rector of the St. Petersburg Institute of Civil Engineers, built a neo-Gothic-style house on the tower plot at Pikk 62. R. Bernhard designed the city wall and the tower as the southeast facade of his building. Round rooms were added to the Hattorpe tower, with medieval loopholes as windows," writes architect Andri Ksenofontov. "At the same time, the tower was emptied from the inside like a cocktail straw. In 1896, Rudolf's son Erwin, also a famous architect, built a new floor on the tower in a neo-Gothic fairy tale style.
